MORE BAGHDAD -

Ned Paker's Nov 4th Entry to the
UK Times Inside Iraq Weblog.

He describes a very tense scene in Baghdad. Curfews have been imposed around Iraq, and the checkpoints are back in Baghdad.

I'm just guessing Mr Negroponte's visit had something to do with the re-establishment of those checkpoints after there had been some friction about them earlier.

Pride of Baghdad
is a graphic novel which
originated with a news item.

In spring 2003, Baghdad Zoo was bombed, and a pride of lions escaped. They roamed the city until advancing American troops shot them dead... The lions have various adventures, vividly pictured, as they prowl Baghdad's ruins.

John Sutherland reviews this book by
Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon.

FLAME-THROWER --

Trial in London of Mizanur Rahman, 23, a web designer. Seems to be charged with something like incitement to murder and race hatred while he was addressing a protest on Feb 3rd.

Someone may have videotaped him, but who knows exactly what he was caught saying on the tape.

This is the lively tabloid version
of the story from The Sun.

A VIEWER'S NOTES -

Salam Pax
returned to NewsNight
tonight with a report
about Saddam Hussein's trial.

His segment, which is about 15 minutes long, begins at about 21:00 minutes in to the show, but the tape editor usually pulls it out so you can watch it as a stand-alone if you wait awhile.

It was good to see him again.

OMINOUS ECHO -

Winning entry from the Iranian
Anti-Holocaust Cartoon Contest.

The verbal descriptions which I have been reading do not seem accurate to me now that I've seen it for myself.

The genocidal intention represented by the tower of the Auschwitz train station is echoed by the congregation of the Golden Dome Mosque in Jerusalem who share the same genocidal agenda as the Nazis before them. The two shapes are used as an echo device in symbolism.

Do you think the artist's perception is accurate?

MASKED RIDER -

A masked woman refused to show her face to a bus driver in England so that her photo ID bus pass could be checked.

Under regulations passengers are required to confirm their identity if using a photo bus pass.

"If passengers aren't able to do this they will still be able to travel by paying for their trip."

Intead, she plans to give the bus company orders to obey her.

FAR-FLUNGS (4) -

It is a Dark and Stormy Day... Although I started surfing rather early, I had to log offline for some thunder and possible lightening before I could post any entries.

# The Big Buzz around SoFlo today is the Ann Coulter Case: she has made some denigrating remarks about Florida voters in recent years and does not seem to be responding to the authorities' satisfaction about her voting registration.

I'm an Independent and do not usually delve into partisan politics. This is Jose Lambiet's take on it; he's a featured columnist for the Palm Beach Post.

# Disaffected from
Tunbridge Wells writes . . .

Mrs Corrine Chapman, 61, captain of the Kent County Ladies Golf Association, was dining at the new Vineyard Retaurant in Sittingbourne when the manager approached her and asked her to take off her "hoodie" or leave.

Frankly, I don't get it. Hoods are no good, but masks are just fine? Go figure. Surely, there's some misunderstanding. Perhaps Jeremy Paxman at NewsNight could clear up this apparent anomaly. It's a real thumb-sucker.

EXPLOSIVE READING -
Here and There . . .

# LIBRARY BOMB ARREST: Authorities have arrested Thomas James Zajac, 53, in connection with a blast that damaged Salt Lake City's main library on Sept 15th after finding his fingerprints on bomb remnants at the scene. It appears that a hobby shop-type rocket igniter was used to detonate a pipe bomb. The explosion blew a hole in a third-floor window and damaged a chair. There were no injuries, but 400 people were evacuated from the library. The motive for the blast is still a mystery.

========================

# GITMO POPULAR READING: A soldier comes around with a bookmobile cart. Detainees seem to favor Arabic poets and British mysteries like Agatha Christie. Harry Potter is also said to be a favorite. The library collection is stored in a double-wide trailer which houses books in 16 languages including Arabic and Chinese.

BBC'S BUMPY WEEK -

# In an Op-Ed piece at the UK Sunday Mail, Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, asserts that on-air news readers won't be permitted to wear tribal face masks:

*BBC closes door on
newsreaders in Muslim veils*

The piece then goes on to discuss the "secret summit meeting" which was "leaked" during which some BBC executives supposedly admitted they have a "liberal bias." Oddly, Thompson vehemently denies the meeting was secret:

*In fact the seminar was open to external participants and many outside guests took part. Far from being secret, it was streamed live on the internet.*

I wasn't aware that any such meeting was streaming or about to be streamed. If I had been aware of such, I believe I would have made an effort to watch. I have to presume Thompson is being coy about this or, perhaps, even pickwickian. Perhaps he only narrow-streamed it to "Have Your Say, Kent!" in an effort to mollify the legendary Disgusted From Tunbridge Wells.

# Last week the BBC NewsNight program scored a big "get" with their interview of the Taleban in some remote location. I happened to catch that show and watched over the internet on my laptop.

Before the controversy about it eclipses the content, I thought I discerned at least one bright and hopeful spot in the presentation: the Taleban said they had changed their position on videos. And they appointed an official spokesman, a Mr Arrif.

I was delighted that they demonstrated that they have the capacity to change and that their policies and positions are not set in cement. I didn't have any particular criticism of the reporter, but the overall tone of the presentation seemed mysteriously hostile toward the TV audience or viewers. I was rather baffled by this off-putting tone which I found somewhat distasteful.

Mr Arrif appeared on screen all wrapped up like a mummy, as if he were talking to us from the midst of a sandstorm. Yes, he was masked. I have no idea why. It loooked a bit silly. Perhaps he was masked because he was actually Adam Azzam... are Azzam and Arrif one and the same??? Well, have you ever seen both of them in the same room together? Neither have I. Hey, just a thought ;-)
