SHAKEUPS AT ALT CHAIN:
Standardization
Now Required -
# Steve Perry, Editor of City Pages, the Twin Cities' largest alt weekly, resigned early last week after a meeting with an exec from NewTimes/VV. He had been on the job for 13 years. The change left the staff "shellshocked." The editor of their local mainstream daily Strib had just left to become Editor of the Miami Herald, and the Strib divested by the McClatchy syndicate.
# And in a parallel move: Will Swaim, founding editor of the OC Weekly, an alternative newspaper, resigned Thursday, citing philosophical differences with the new owners. "[NewTimes/VV] run a very complicated organization and want to have standardization across all 18 markets," Swaim said, referring to the areas where the owners have newspapers. He had been on the job for 11 years and became publisher in 2004.
*The New Times/Village Voice merger created a chain of 17 alternative weeklies.*
