NEW VOICES
TELLING THE NEWS -
Tish Grier writes at Online Journalism Review about the unique way an online news website is covering the biggest murder trial in Canadian history.
*Among the 350 members of the mainstream media that packed a Vancouver, B.C. Superior Courtroom where the trial of Robert Pickton began on January 22, were two "citizen correspondents" from Orato.com.*
Pickton is a 57-year old pig butcher who is accused of killing 26 women from Vancouver.
*Orato.com is growing a base of citizen journalists with community feedback... and the occasional cash prize.*

Birmingham UK:
SPY PLANE SEARCH - two
terrorist suspects still at large -
Flying above Birmingham...
*The aircraft can monitor computer and mobile telephone communications and long wave radios. The "spotter planes" are used to trace missing persons, escaped criminals and stolen cars and also for intelligence gathering. Other flights over the city were restricted to allow the plane access.*
Police have removed several bags full of computer equipment from the Blade internet cafe on Stratford Rd.
The police "handed out 5,000 leaflets, translated into Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali and Urdu, in an attempt to keep a lid on simmering anxieties."
----------------------------------
Dr Mohammed Naseem, chairman of Birmingham Central mosque, will address a public rally [Saturday] afternoon. Several thousand people are expected to attend.
*Mr Naseem will share a stage with, among others, Moazzem Begg, the ex-teacher who spent three years in Guantanamo Bay and who has links with one of the bookshops raided this week.*
----------------------------------
*U.S. authorities, who have been briefed about the kidnap plot in the West Midlands, have expressed their concerns about the "human pipeline" that arranges for young British militants to travel to Pakistan for training at terrorist camps.
Officials in Washington recently claimed to have identified another group of nine young Britons being schooled at one camp on the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan whom they dubbed "the English brothers".*

I followed the last link the writer gave for Global Frequency at Wikipedia and found it interesting. It's the title of a comic book series of science fiction which has a cult following, although I've never heard of it before.

THE WRAITH OF MAKTABAH -
Who is behind the Maktabah Bookstore in Birmingham UK which figured in the recent terror raid in that city?
His name is Moazzem Begg:
"The name that will not go away."
And he may become a new tabloid cultural icon as the emblematic face of extremism in the UK, if this tongue-in-cheek article is any indication of the tone of some press coverage to come.

DRAWS, TOOTS, LEAVES -
Jose Varela, the morose editorial cartoonist who invaded the Miami Herald's Spanish Edition with a toy gun and demanded the resignation of its editor on November 24, got two years probation, 200 hours community service, and a requirement to stay away from his former employers.
Varela, who is still unemployed and with children to support, already has enough problems to cope with. The verdict seems to have taken this into consideration.
Varela says he's been writing a book which he hopes to get published.

WITH THE POLATNICKS -
Itai Polatnick, who is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, will be arraigned next Tuesday. If Dade County operates anything like Broward County, you'll find the docket posted online sometime after Tisha B'Av, but don't count on it.
Yet another version of Itai's biography and CV is given in this article. [What is this-- the third or fourth? It's dizzying.] It is accompanied by a long list of chemicals alleged to have been cached in their Blue Lagoon domicile. Attorney Menachem Mayberg is representing him in this matter.
And how many different passports does Itai have, by the way? This article doesn't tell us.

SoFlo: DEAD TREES BURP -
Bob Norman at The Daily Pulp blog relates that Earl Maucker has been given an Editor of the Year award "for his leadership role in growing the newspaper's readership, etc." Bob addressed the kind of material this new readership has been posting online in a recent blog entry and in an article at the local New Times weekly.
Needless to add, I don't agree with the award. Most residents of Broward County get their news from their TV's, and I haven't seen any hard evidence that Maucker has significantly changed that. Moreover, his rantings against independent blogs simply antagonize people.
:: Also at E&P:
*Big media conglomerates have less influence amid the continued explosion of news sites, blogs and podcasts, ...Rupert Murdoch said in a Davos session moderated by Charlie Rose and available via Webcast.*

SoFlo: FATAL ENCOUNTER -
Here's a story that doesn't
make any sense... so far:
When police found G** at the couple's home, he told them he met an unknown woman and they drove to an area near the inter-coastal water way in his truck where an argument ensued.
G** claimed that the female victim punched him in the face.
G** then recounted to police that he used a handgun to strike the woman in the head. G** reportedly then drove to Oak** Elementary School where he dumped the woman's body.
The woman's dead body was discovered by a neighbor walking her dogs.
His lawyer will probably claim that the female victim tried to rape this guy. Wanna bet?
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Florida, the Tampa City Council has voted unanimously for the city attorney to explore the idea of banning sex offenders from living in Tampa.
*Such citywide bans aren't unprecedented, by the way, just untested. Miami Beach and Dyersville, Iowa, passed similar laws in 2005.*
They're trying to dump all their freakazoids into my neighborhood.
