SoFlo: BUNKER BREAKOUT -

Pasty-face reporter surfs
into dragon-infested waters . . .

Yesterday (Monday), the SF Sun-Sentinel achieved a kind of breakthrough. They emerged from their bunker on Las Olas Blvd and ventured into Cyberspace. Tentatively, perhaps; experimentally, perhaps. What happened?

Anthony Man discovered a housewife in Coral Springs who is writing a Blog. He doesn't share a properly formatted hyperlink to her Blog; instead, he spells out the Blog's address. Well, it's a quasi-link outward.

But this is an incremental step
of progress for the publication.

What about readers? The article drew 500 comments! This is an unusually high number at the SFSS.

What does that mean? It demonstrates that the SFSS is now moving in the right direction. If they reach out, readers will respond.

Historically, part of the traditional function of American newspapers has been to act as a catalyst in civic engagement. Many newspapers in the U.S. were originally established by civic-minded men who had a vision for their community's development.

I can only hope that Anthony Man and his colleagues take note of the remarkable response they got and continue to link outwardly before Broward County completely deteriorates into one vast favela or a tropical sequel to the ruination of the South Bronx.
