MORE ITEMS SEIZED IN PERUGIA -

Meredith Kercher Murder Case -

The UK Sun reports that detectives have conducted a new search in the Perugia home of Meredith Kercher. Among the items reported to have been taken away are: a Harry Potter book, two guitars, a hairdryer, a bag and clothes.

A new and very good photo of Meredith in her Halloween costume appears with this report. And in this new photo, you can more clearly see the "collar" she was wearing. Previously described by some as black lace, but it now appears to be more likely a (black) velvet ribbon.

This item has the potential to be a fetish item which could excite a sexual deviate. Collars are sometimes worn in bondage or domination/submission sexual role-playing game scenarios.

Yes, it looks like we're back to the crypto-sexual magic scenario theory again.

Well, that's my reaction to it anyway - at the moment. I wouldn't want Biscotti to sue me because my Theory of the Crime keeps changing. Heaven forfend!

SOME BRIEF CLIPS (6#) -

# Rupert Murdoch recently said that newspaper publishers have to understand "they will make 15 or 20% margins instead of 35% margins."

# NPR's On The Media this weekend has a feature on photographer Robert Capa, and a segment on the Atlantic's decision to publish a cover photo and story about Britney Spears, plus: the end of the TV series "The Wire," for those who've been addicted to it.

# Sheikh Qaradawi, who appears on Al Jazeera TV, has called on Skippy Bin Laden to surrender himself during an interview with al-Sharq al-Awsat.

#*[Dutch] Freedom party PVV leader Geert Wilders will not give a press conference to present his anti-Koran film Fitna. He is putting "all his efforts" into ensuring that the film can be seen on the internet at the end of this month.*

# A Dutch Blogger comments (in English) on the movie controversy, objecting to the sovereignty of the censors.

# And an amusing piece to start your weekend in which writer Ed Lin recounts one of the perils of doing Book Readings which the public attends: an occasional weirdo shows up and confronts you.

THEORIES WITHOUT HONOR? (2#) -

Joe Tacopina is being sued in Italy by another lawyer, Walter Biscotti, for supposedly defaming Biscotti's client, Rudy Guede.

Joe has a Theory of the Crime in the Meredith Kercher Murder Case. According to Joe's theory (as I understand it), so far he sees only credible tangible evidence of Guede's involvement.

Well, theories are debatable, no?
My theories about that case keep changing.

Local Perugia Blogger Frank has the skinny on it.

Oh, and here's Joe's new case in Florida:
The Stripper and the Judge. [sptimes]

NY GOV SCANDAL (2#) -

If you're interested in keeping up with this case, I would suggest bookmarking the WSJ's Law Blog for that purpose.

I'm not going to continue actively blogging it, unless there is a significant development I just can't bring myself to ignore. Once you've lived through a number of case like this one, they become a Genre, and they're all sufficiently similar so that it gets repetitious and then boring.

Another issue here is that I had a negative reaction to Spitzer's two press conferences. His wife stood next to him with a stony face that made her look very hard, and, I thought, made her look like just another hardnosed hooker. Indeed, the two of them together looked like a pair of vampires to me. They didn't come off as very sympathetic creatures.

If you're looking for an alternate choice of newspaper to read about this and don't want to go Tabloid, I would suggest the NY Sun. At one time, NYC had a lot of newspapers, but, alas, not anymore.

NAKED EMPERORS
AND MONEY-LAUNDERING (4#) -

Eliot Spitzer, the governor of the state of New York (aka Client-9) has become ensnared in a Federal investigation into wire transfers and money laundering, which the Feds have been going after intensively of late. Their interest in this kind of activity recently became elevated mainly as it relates to the financing of Terrorism. But, in the course of one such investigation, Federal Law Enforcement happened upon a different activity: prostitution.

I'm sorry to tell you that I find this story mostly boring and tedious. But we'll try to cover the basics here anyway. This is fodder for the ever-hungry NewsHole, so if you're interested in it, you should be able to find plenty of other material about it to read.

Bookish: WHAT CAUGHT
MY EYE THIS WEEKEND (6#) -

# Embedded Books at U.S. military bases in Iraq: "My favorite book collection this trip is at the Habbaniya base, two shelves beneath a poster of the venomous snakes found in southwest Asia. Maybe it’s the setting: an abandoned British hotel. You half expect to see Evelyn Waugh sipping gin and grousing about the locals." [Tony Pery]

# From the page to the silver screen: Eddie Muller reports that The Kind One, a noirish first novel about an amnesiac who is an employee of a vice kingpin by Tom Epperson, is being optioned for Casey Affleck. I believe Casey is the kid brother of movie star Ben.

# In the Shetland Isles, Tora Hamilton is digging a peatbog grave for a pony when she uncovers the body of a young woman who has had her heart ripped out, apparently while still alive, and pagan runes carved into her back. "This debut novel will deservedly be a bestseller, but it remains just a whiff of testosterone short of a masterpiece." Mystery novel SACRIFICE by SJ Bolton reviewed by Peter Millar.

# Dinaw Mengestu's protagonist Sepha Stephanos is a displaced Ethiopian living in Washington DC. He is from a privileged background in Addis Ababa, but was forced to flee his homeland by the change of regime. The author of this novel is a graduate of Georgetown University. Children of the Revolution reviewed by Razeshta Sethna.

# "How to replace
the editor with a computer." [commentary]

# Colette Bancroft in St Pete interviews writer Harry Crews. I've never read him, though I've heard of him. His writing is sometimes described as Southern Gothic.

# Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's top cleric has issued a warning against giving money to charities financing evil groups with shady backgrounds or dodgy reputations, Dawn reports from Okaz/AP.

"The warning... comes just days after police found an audio message from Al Qaeda No 2 Ayman al-Zawahri exhorting his followers to collect money for needy families in Afghanistan and Pakistan."

# According to another report, the tape was in Egyptian dialect, but someone else was speaking.
