MR CLEAVER APPEALS -
Meredith Kercher Murder Case -
NB: An afterthought was added to this entry.
Frank at Perugia Shock blog has posted his colloquial reconstruction of the Italian Supreme Court's response to Raffaele Sollecito's appeal to be freed in advance of the upcoming trial. The Court rejected his appeal.
To clarify, it's my impression that the question before the Court was a narrow question: cut him loose or not? They were not evaluating the guilt or innocence of the suspects or the validity of the evidence against them.
It appears to me that the Court preferred to err on the side of caution. Although it may be unspoken in their written decision, the issue of Public Safety has to be among their concerns. And Sollecito, after all, is a kid who posed for a photo as a maniac with a meat cleaver and such. If there is any possibility that these suspects could cause trouble at large, this Court decided not to take that chance. I think I agree with their decision out of my concern for Public Safety.
Two topics in the contents drew my attention: the athletic shoe print and the court's impression that Sollecito has a weak character with Knox being the dominant partner
of the duo.
Again, much thanks to Frank.
+ Upon further reflection, I think I need to parse this issue for some: this higher court was ruling on a point of Law. Was the Law followed appropriately and faithfully in this case? The Court was ruling on this technical issue, in essence. The Court ruled that the Law was being followed and that detention was justified based on the established Law. I hope this helps.

ON THAT ACCURSED NIGHT - (2#) -
Meredith Kercher Murder Case -
Frank has posted a new entry at his Perugia Shock blog. It is his colloquial reconstruction of the Italian Supreme Court's ruling rejecting the request submitted by the Amanda Knox defense lawyers, presumably, to free her. And it is a bravo performance by Frank for which we can all be grateful. It may help to clarify for some, the Court's justification for its ruling - not the Court's reasons, but its justification.
I have linked here to some of the Crime Scene photos, to remind you of what the police found there when they smashed through the door. This was not simply a killing. This was a scene of butchery - the way some people might butcher an animal if they didn't know how to go about it. Not only was Meredith Kercher butchered, but there was blood smeared all over. How does that happen? In some ways it is reminiscent of the Charlie Manson Family Murders. What state of mind produces such a crime scene?
On the comment thread at Frank's blog, a lawyer (presumably JoeT) has posted his glorious Chain of Reason in Amanda Knox's defense. This is not about how well one can construct a Chain of Reason; it is about that Crime Scene. I want the other young women in Perugia to be safe; that lawyer obviously doesn't give a rat's ass.
Amanda Knox is being detained, but she is not being abused or tortured. She can use her time in detention to get some reading done: Proust, War and Peace, James Joyce or whatever. She should use her time in detention for something constructive. It's a matter of character. The detention, even if she is innocent, should be regarded as a character-building experience. Plenty of people have found themselves involuntarily detained - some of them in iron lungs. Amanda Knox is not so special.

STATE OF THE ANGLOSPHERE - (3#) -
English Near and Far . . .
Happy St George's Day! It's a celebration of everything English, including the English language. So how're we doing?
Many English people awoke this morning to discover in their newspapers that the European Union is in the process of trying to wipe England off the map. This is pretty outrageous.
"As Gordon Brown hoisted the English national flag over 10 Downing Street to celebrate St George's Day, it was revealed that EU officials had revised a map wiping out the country and the Channel."
::Mail:: ..... and ..... ::Telegraph::

Closer to home, Gary Pruitt, head of McClatchy, announced yesterday that McClatchy, the parent company of the Miami Herald, is not going bankrupt.
Well, whoopty-frikkin-doo!
Pruitt is in California, 3000 miles away from Florida, and has no idea what's going on here.
A) Most people do not want to read a publication that consists mostly of movie listings and used car ads.
B) Stop antagonizing the dwindling English-literate readership by constantly demanding our E-Mail addresses.
You are never going to get my E-Mail

MAD, BAD & DANGEROUS - (4#) -
Meredith Kercher Murder Case -
Just in time for the Evening News . . .
# The three suspects in the case must remain incarcerated because they could flee if released or interfere with with evidence and because there are "grave indications" of their guilt in the homicide which took place.
A panel of judges said that Amanda Knox had a "negative personality" and that Sollecito had a "fragile character."
Richard Owen reports that Sollecito and the Kercher Family did not communicate at the Inquest Hearing which just took place over the weekend.
# Italian courts have to issue written explanations of their decisions. ... The court noted that Knox had contradicted herself on several occasions.
# SkyNews reports that Judge Gemelli's reasons
were just published in his report: number 16410.
* * * * * * * * * *
Notes:
The SkyNews report is much stronger than Owen's.
A brief version of the AP wire report is all over the Seattle news media where the Knox family lives and Amanda has friends.
The Sky report is on U.S. Fox TV channels.

"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! ... Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms!"

TACKLES THE NY TIMES - (3#) -
Matthew Sheffield previews a story at Newsweek about the upcoming competition between the newly redesigned WSJ and the NY Times newspapers.
"Along with the refocused front page, Murdoch is effectively relaunching the entire A section as a catchall for general news. As of Monday, the second section, Marketplace, becomes home to the Journal's coverage of corporate America, while the third section, Money and Investing, remains the showcase for news of the financial markets and investing. A culture section is under development for a fall debut in the Journal's weekend edition, and Murdoch has added a weekly sports page. The op-ed section, famous for its erudite and influential espousal of conservative ideology, will grow to three pages from two."
The UK has several "national" daily newspapers, while our "nationals" have been mostly weekly until recently. With the emergence of USA Today, there has been an effort on refocusing some publications to take on this role. It will be interesting to watch the progress of this issue.

Too much cave-sitting. He really
needs to get outside a lot more.

MEZ: COURT AT GROUND LEVEL -
Meredith Kercher Murder Case -
Frank at Perugia Shock blog has posted a new entry based on his visit to the court in Perugia at the time of the hearing. It looks like Frank expects an "official" report from this hearing to be printed out and distributed in the near future.
Until then, it appears that Mez's blood sample used to determine alcohol level somehow got contaminated for the do-over test. Keep in mind: just because one lab technician made a mistake on one test sample, doesn't invalidate everything else.
Frank mentions Joe Tacopina. I believe JoeT's role will be to rescue Amanda Knox in the event she gets convicted and sentenced to a prison term over there.
If that happens, I believe that JoeT will try to get her transferred to an American prison to serve out her sentence. And, if and when he accomplishes that, he will then get her sprung out of jail, maybe with the claim that the Italian process was not up to American standards. Just my opinion at the moment.
