YR MONEY OR YR LIFE: Iraqi graduate student and Arabic language teacher Abbas Kadhim in California, writing about Jewish artifacts in a somewhat damaged condition that have been left in Iraq, references an article at The Guardian which raises the questions: *about who now owns the documents, where they should be housed and whether money will be available to restore them.* Kadhim responds vituperatively:
>> What a ridiculous question! Of course they belong to Iraq. The fact that the U.S. bombed the place where they were kept, and they were soaked in water, should not make Iraq responsible for the damage. <<
Of course they belong to The Jewish People. And NOT
to Iraq.
But the other questions are worthwhile raising and, alas, not unique. Similar questions were raised not long ago in a feature story about the last synagogue left standing in Beirut which no longer has a congregation or even a Jewish population at all. Some members of that congregation may be living now in Paris it seemed. Anyway, there's been talk of restoring it or, at least, fixing it, and perhaps turning it into a museum. But who would pay for all that? The issues remain yet unresolved.
