The Candid Camera Show at Abu Ghraib
>> I’m not much of deep-thinker when it comes to psychology, but I’ve been reading a lot of Philip K. Dick lately, and his troubling view of the brave new world was nothing short of prophetic...
More than anything else, I wondered if the vast array of "reality-based" programming now available to American and British audiences has numbed us into assuming that cameras are our friends, and any sins committed in the pursuit of our allotted 15 minutes are of fame will be forgiven. For some desperate souls, it comes down to a choice between committing a terrible crime and going on "Springer."
How far a leap was it, really, from Candid Camera and America’s Funniest Home Videos, to Voyeur Dorm, Janet Jackson’s "costume malfunction" and the Abu Ghraib tapes?
Obviously, these videos and photographs didn’t take themselves. Neither did they exist in an intellectual or informational vacuum... <<
+ You might want to copy this piece to floppy and then read later at your leisure. It's good-quality, thoughtful, humorous writing.
