AFGHAN BOOK IS BEST SELLER -

*It doesn't happen often, but when Celina Spiegel of Riverhead Books got the manuscript for The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, she knew she had a best seller in her hands.

Critics and booksellers praised The Kite Runner when it arrived in stores in May 2003. It is published in 13 countries; DreamWorks has optioned the movie rights. But it really took off when regions and radio stations - 12 to date - adopted the paperback, which was published this spring, for community reads.

Current U.S. print run:
54,000 hardcovers; 500,000 paperbacks.*
