It didn't take long for the second shoe to drop on the Douglas Feith resignation. Sure enough, Prof Juan Cole took the ball and ran with it:

"Having a Likudnik as the number three man in the Pentagon is a nightmare for American national security..."

Did I bait him into it? Moi? Nooooo.

He doesn't need any bait; it seems to be a preoccupation with him.

But here's what General Tommy Franks had to say about Feith:

*Retired general Tommy Franks, who commanded the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, memorably referred to Mr Feith in a pep talk with military planners as "the dumbest ******* guy on the planet."*

For all of Prof Coles' conspiracy theories, Feith doesn't seem very capable of carrying out any elaborate plots, according to Gen Franks.

Who do you want to believe?

I don't know much about Feith, but I have a high regard for Gen Franks' ability to evaluate performance.
