FAIZA FLOATING SOMEWHERE -
Faiza Jarrar just returned to Amman, Jordan, from a conference in the Gulf. She seems to have experienced a form of Existential Vertigo while in the very modern Dubai Airport:
*I stood amazed on the passport stamp line, feeling myself in a world without an identity, a world of human mixtures, on each line there is a group speaking a language that doesn't resemble the language of the group on the line before, or after it. I felt a great foreboding, as if myself was asking me: Where are we??*
+ Sounds a bit like Alphaville from her description. She also recalls the conference where she seems to have become aware of her Cultural Dislocation, as she moves from a relatively closed society (Ba'athist Iraq) to more open societies.
This is a very long entry best suited, perhaps, to a rainy Sunday afternoon; thus, you may want to copy it to floppy so you can read it offline, if you're interested in these issues at all.
