One thing that has puzzled me during this Hurricane Katrina Episode is that I never heard anything about Ham Radio operators establishing an emergency communications network which they usually do during disasters. Not a word about it.
A hacker who works with NGO groups has established a weblog to document his trip to the Hurricane Katrina area. Lotsa tech-type stuff:
*We now have 8 public terminals, custom ethernet cables, scavenged switches as well as other things. If you’re in the area we’ve got an open wifi network.*

And here is a link to the radio station in the Gulf area which has managed to stay on the air. Their website says that you can listen to it streaming online or on shortwave:
