BACK TO THE CAVES -

That crazy old coot, the serial-killing Egyptian Dr Z, came out of his cave this week to wag his finger at us again.

*Al-Jazeera got another tape from Ayman al-Zawahiri, and is addressing it the same way it did last time: airing clips, and then letting critics respond point by point.*

:: Prof Aardvark :: describes coverage.

:: Attaboy:: funny, but to the point.

:: The Popinjays:: brief but sourced.

:: British Papers:: respond (BBC).

:: London Times:: coverage.

WINGING IT -

*Howdy. I'm in an internet cafe in Hamra, West Beirut. Wow, is Beirut different from Cairo. It's like I'm not even in the Middle East anymore. BMWs and Mercedes abound, few headscarves, the air isn't toxic...*

:: Praktike in Motion ::

And our blogging friend, Alhamedi,
the deeply-undercover Watchman
in The Magic Kingdom is back
and in good spirits.

"MURDER MOST FLORAL" -

I have been enjoying a TV series this summer which is being shown in the US on the PBS channel. It's a cozy featuring a bicker team of two middled-aged broads in the gardening biz who solve mysteries along the way. They list their website on the show which turns out to be quite elaborate
and attractive.

The Teele-DeFede Tangle:

"How far is too far ... in media coverage
of politicians accused of corruption?"

:: A thoughtful reaction by a lawyer.

"Should the media -- local and otherwise,
take a hard look at just how hard it can
pursue public officials who are accused,
but not yet convicted, of crimes, before
that pursuit turns into hounding a
person into their grave? Absolutely.
But don't hold your breath. Every
news outlet and their Web-site
is having boffo ratings right now."

:: A local SoFlo black woman reacts.

"The Arthur Teele story is nearly
being overshadowed by the discussion
of the legality/ethics of Jim DeFede's
firing by The Herald."

:: Journo-researcher comments.

Meanwhile, the Journalism
Just-Us Club is in Mind-Lock
about the firing.

"DeFede's editor, Tom Fiedler,
said he based the firing more
on morality than law."

Somehow, the reporters and
newspaper columnists all seem
to believe that exploiting
someone who sounds
desperate is not immoral.

Only some bloggers,
so far, have expressed
a differing perspective.

Maybe that's one reason
there are blogs nowadays.

CROP CIRCLE NEWS -

A large, fancy Star of David has been
inscribed in a wheat field near the
ancient stone circles of Avebury,
Wiltshire, England. The entire glyph
is about 400 feet in diameter.

It is listed for July 25 at
Linda Moulton Howe's site.
And there is a photo of it.

DEATH + MEDIA DEPRAVITY:
Suicide of Local Pol -

One story dominated the local news
media in South Florida until today:
the death of Arthur Teele.

The suicide by self-inflicted gunshot of this Black politico triggered an entire spate of depraved news media activity. The local press perverted the situation by injecting itself into the event and making itself the central focus of the story. Then the press claimed that it was the "real victim" of Teele's death. It became clear as the story unfolded that the local press was using Teele as a pretext and vehicle to spin all kinds of lurid tales, so that they must have resented his exit which deprived them of the opportunity to continue exploiting him as their toy. Most of the press coverage was disgusting and very inappropriate to the occasion, making for a very unpleasant weekend.

It looked like an eruption of group insanity and utterly out of control. On Sunday I was surprised to see that even Howard Kurtz had gotten sucked up the tube by the phenomenon.

You would have to dig to find some factual material about Teele for any record of his accomplishments. He was a decorated Vietnam war hero and a lawyer, among other things. His funeral on Monday included a military 21-gun salute and a dignified gathering far away from South Florida; it was held in Tallahassee.

I can only hope that his burial
will close the door to further
orgies of news media depravity.
But I am not optimistic.
