MOSQUE OPPOSED:
Unwelcome in Black
Christian Neighborhood -
Yesterday, Sunday, Michael Putney devoted his Local 10 TV show to the controversy over the Pompano Beach Mosque issue. He interviewed the lawyer for the mosque's congregation. And then interviewed Rev O'Neal Dozier, the African-American Christian clergyman who opposes the establishment of the mosque in its new location.
The TV station is so amateurish that there is no article recapping the show on their website. They simply posted a link to a "slideshow" of a Jack Chick book.
In general, Putney did an effective job of maintaining a level of civility in the discussion, but never addressed Rev Dozier's concern that pamphlets inciting hate, murder or violence toward believers in other faiths could be available in the building. Nor was Dozier given any assurances by the congregation's lawyer that such material would not be tolerated, or, if found, would be eliminated and promptly removed. Instead, the lawyer, tried to dismiss Dozier's concerns by mischaracterizing them as "hate speech." Putney ignored this concern altogether, since, we can assume, he doesn't live in their neighborhood.
A couple of articles which encompass the issue have been published recently in two local newspapers:
:: Dozier/Miami Herald ::
:: Dozier/Sun-Sentinel ::
