KORANGALI SQUEEZE PLAY -

Eastern Afghanistan is currently a very active theater of conflict. The rough terrain encompasses high, pine-covered mountains in Kunar and neighboring Nuristan province. U.S. military sources say the local Korangali tribe is a key link to Al-Qaeda and other Islamic militants operating there.

Sanctions have been imposed against the southern section of the Korangal Valley in Kunar province.The sanctions prevent goods and amenities from entering or leaving the valley in in order to pressure Korangali village elders to force the militants out of the area or to turn people against the elders.
