MASKED ENCOUNTERS -

Last night I had a disturbing experience which has continued to bother me all day today.

Around midnight, while busy in the kitchen, I caught BBC World on TV at almost the periphery of my attention, until a woman wrapped completely in black with her face masked began shrieking at some sort of news conference.

"The veil does not
cause a barrier-- I can see
perfectly well with my veil on!"

It was a terrifying image. She looked just like a Middle Eastern terrorist. And, for a hundred years before the Olympic event when I first noticed such terrorists on the TV screen, we used to have the KKK running around wrapped and masked in white to resemble wraiths.

It was blood-curdling to hear the BBC use very sinister Trickology by referring to Ms Azmi's mask as a veil. A veil used to be made of some sort of netting material. What this woman was wearing was a mask. And I found her manner both hostile and menacing.

The last time I encountered a woman of similar appearance was during the week preceding the WTC attack on 9/11/01. She suddenly appeared in my local neighborhood supermarket in the middle of a weekday when nearly everyone in that bedroom community was away at work and only a scant handful of other woman were shopping. When she left the market, she got into a white SUV which was being driven by a man wearing a shortsleeve sport shirt. Once the attack happened, she vanished, never to be seen again. And, of course, I could never identify her because: she was wearing that mask.

I don't want to live in a community where people are allowed to run around wearing masks.
