A few days ago, I happened across a story by Sebastian Rotella of LAT about some of the Al Qaeda characters and their culture. The article transcended the prosaic. It was charming and well-written. It made the people who were depicted in his dispatch come alive for us as "real people."

From recently declassified documents that were captured in Afghanistan and Iraq, a fascinating picture emerges.

In the interim, the LATimes changed the URL on this article, and I don't know how much longer it will be available to readers from their archives. But I did not want to let it pass without noting it. And I hope it doesn't just disappear into the ether.
