Mez: Kidnapped by Gypsies? (5#) -

More problems for
Italian Journalism are on the horizon . . .

A newly proposed law would prohibit journalists from reporting on criminal investigations before they come to trial. The journalists have a very tight union already, but new provisions in the law would restrict reportage to only "professional" journalists, ie: members of their union.

All of this follows spurious reports of Italian children being kidnapped by Gypsies, which the newspapers allegedly have not yet retracted, as well as alleged leaks in the Amanda Knox trial.

Unless Amanda Knox gets kidnapped by Gypsies, she is expected back in court on Tuesday (that's tomorrow) for slander proceedings, which could add another six years to her prison sentence if she is found guilty. She is being accused of slandering the police in this round.

The newly proposed law would also ban
cameras and microphones in the courtroom.

Roberta Petrelluzzi told La Repubblica:

"Only totalitarian regimes have secret trials...
They want a public doped up on Happy Talk News."

But ABC TV usually includes
some Happy Talk Crime News.
