RIYADH MUNI ELECTIONS -

*It's election time in Riyadh. The tone in the capital and its suburbs is charged with sloganeering and promises, as the 1,828 candidates have launched the election campaign on Saturday.

A number of tents on the roadside across the city, billboards displaying candidates pictures with election slogans and voters moving from one tent to another is a common sight in the capital. All the commotion is aimed at electing half of the 14-member Municipal Council on February 10...

From the 400,000 eligible voters in Riyadh Region around 149,000 have registered in the month-long registration that ended December 23, 2004...

Almost all the candidates have launched websites announcing their election promises and plans, should they be elected to serve the community.*
