Scott Rothstein & Alias "Regret" . . .
The colorful lawyer who dressed in Damon Runyonesque style and talked like he thought of himself as a comic book character has been in seclusion and out of the public eye since he returned to Florida. Meanwhile, the TD Bank has been ordered by the judge to produce its records by midday Monday, at which point there will be a status evaluation.
Rothstein spread his largesse around; he is said to have injected "millions into businesses, charities, political candidates and expensive toys."
On a more ominous note: He is reported to have bought a $400,000 home in Weston for Debra Villegas whose husband, Tony Villegas, is accused of killing attorney Melissa Lewis, a member of Rothstein's firm.
Rothstein hasn't been charged with anything specific yet.
Mr Regret, the rumored bagman,
has disappeared for the moment.

Discovering Cuba -
Our Neighbor, Yoani Sanchez . . .
Word comes in today via our local 6-degrees community network that Cuban state security agents yesterday attempted to forcibly abduct our neighbor across the straits, Blogger Yoani Sanchez; and that when they couldn't push her into their vehicle, they beat her up.
"They warned her
that her writings had gone too far."
"too far" - whatever that means.

Case Goes Noir (2#) -
The bank that held the supposedly missing millions says they intend to cooperate with authorities who are investigating the matter. The lawyer, Scott Rothstein, was operating an investment business on the side. TD Bank maintained the account for it, according to a report at the Sentinel.
There's also a dead lady lawyer
associated with Rothstein: Melissa Britt Lewis.
I blogged about the case last year on an
entry called CORKSCREW in which I asked:
"Was this a fairytale murder story?"

Vanity Cult Magazine -
Neal Ungerleider reports that
the Al Qaeda Cult is publishing magazines:
"Issue 11 of Sada al-Malahim... a dense little bastard of a magazine, clocking in at 73 pages of text, graphics and basic-Pagemaker design."
He seems surprised, but the cult also produces videos and a variety of cult swag. Many cults offer swag like mugs, teashirts, keychains, flashlights, etc. And, of course, there were those Skippy Bin Laden dolls.

Iran: Mind Swap -
And only Atlas could perform such a feat . . .
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps is planning to take control over all media, communications and information coming out of Iran. They expect to produce their own Alt-Universe version of News in the future.
By spring, they intend to launch their own agency called Atlas which will tailor information about events according to their own Mind-Swapped Narrative. It will be as painless as two people exchanging their brains with each other.
Farnaz Fassihi reports a story you will not soon forget.

Mez: Two Years On (3#) -
Meredith Kercher Murder Case -
It's been two years since Meredith Kercher, a young university exchange student from south Metropolitan London, was savagely murdered in Perugia, Italy. And her family is hoping the case will come to an end soon.
The trial often seemed to progress in a series of discordant notes as one of the principal defendants exhibited strangely gay behavior which was at odds with the solemnity surrounding the violence of Meredith's bloody death, but reminiscent of the strangely smiling photos of Richard Ramirez, the creepy "Night Stalker" case in California.
Meredith's parents expect to return
to Perugia to attend the end of the trial.

Elusive Ghost Story (2#) -
Remember the song Stella by Starlight ?
Over the weekend, evidently, many people were disappointed to discover that they couldn't get a DVD version of the movie The Uninvited (1944) for Halloween.
The movie is a classic ghost story and a real gem. Consequently, they are campaigning to persuade the studio to produce a DVD. If you are active in movie matters, you may wish to join them.

SoFlo: Bookish Notes (4#) -
It was a dark and stormy night . . .
Got a juicy story or a cracking good yarn?
All you need is a writing implement in good condition and the seat of your pants applied to the seat of your chair in front of it, because it's that time of year again: National Novel Writing Month. And Broward County's epicenter for "30 days and nights of literary abandon" is Node 193.
Unfortunately, my laptop still has a partially-disabled keyboard which I still have to bring back in to the tech shop to get fixed; so, although I've had a couple of stories percolating on my back burner this past year, they'll have to wait.
Even if you're not going to participate this year, you might want to read up on it for some time in the future. They've got message boards and meetups and lots more over there:
:: Local NaNoWriMo ::
# The Miami Book Fair is coming up soon: November 8-15th. A brief note appeared in today's Miami Herald informing us that there is an "Urban Noir" panel planned for Sunday, Nov 15th. Sounds intriguing.
:: Here is the Book Fair's Twitter handle.
:: FBR is promising to live-blog.
:: And a Surprise Discovery:
Chauncey Mabe's new pit stop: Open Page Blog.
