VERY INSIDE KUWAIT -

Some Kuwaiti Bloggers are upset about one of the Ramadan TV specials which they say is racist and promotes terrible stereotypes.

This comment thread is an illuminating look at what they are really buzzing about, which you probably won't read in your local newspaper.

Much of the thread is in English.

RAED LOST+FOUND -

Iraqi Bloggers Central reports that Raed Jarrar has settled in San Francisco and is waiting for his Green Card interview!

I haven't been keeping up with Raed's blog lately. This news, if true, comes as a surprise because I had formed the impression that he didn't like the US very much. I wonder what changed his feelings. Now, there's a real thumb-sucker for you...

IRAQI CHARTER Update -

*The unveiling of the
constitution in Samawah...

Raysan Zayady, a sports jacket over his white dishdasha and sheer summer robe... had yet to read the draft constitution, although he clutched one of the newly distributed copies in his hand. "I don't have e-mail," he confessed.*

This is a nicely descriptive and somewhat atmospheric dispatch by Ellen Knickmeyer, but she never asked the basic question: how many of them read? She shouldn't have made any casual presumptions.

JESUS DRIVES
CAREFULLY, WE HOPE! -

*All 1,500 school bus drivers in Broward County are required to attend this two-day meeting. On the second day, along with the speeches about payroll and driving safety, the meeting would pause every 30 minutes or so for religious-oriented songs and speeches.

All the while, the school bus drivers were being paid between $10 and $20 an hour, meaning it cost taxpayers an estimated $370,000.*

If you had kids, who would you prefer to be their school bus drivers: religious Christians or child molesters?

Is there an Either/Or
choice on the menu?
Just kidding.

I have no objections to religious people working as school bus drivers, as long as the religious aspect is not mandatory or forced on anyone.

CYBER-TRAIL:
Taylor Marie Behl -

The computer and the internet have become so much a part of our lives that they now constitute an avenue of investigation in missing person and suspected murder cases. The recent case of this missing college girl included her computer and web places. Although the entire cyber-trail has not yet been revealed, what is already available to the public is interesting.

*Investigators have searched for clues in at least 7 computers they gathered using search warrants... The computers include Behl’s and her friends.*

:: Taylor Behl's WebSpace ::

The suspect named Benjamin Fawley is a *self-described "Goth/Skater" with an obsession for drawing and sculpting and collecting skulls.*

The Richmond Times-Dispatch has a Compilation Page on Behl, but the entire link doesn't seem to want to register here. I don't know why or how to fix that. Try the link I used here.

HOLIDAY IMPROBABLES -
They say that Truth
is stranger than Fiction...

Last week I watched the
Curb Your Enthusiasm cable TV sitcom for the first time. I didn't find it laughing-out-loud funny, but it was interesting.

One bit stood out, however, as truly golden. In an incident I can only describe as Magic Realism, there is an exchange with a ticket scalper played superlatively by Paul Ben-Victor.

In reality I have never encountered a scalper lurking outside High Holiday religious services, but it seems logical that there would be a need for such a guy to fulfill the need for much sought-after tickets. There are scalpers for rock concert tickets and football tickets, right?

But if ticket scalping on Rosh Hashannah isn't improbable enough for you, what about a very public attempted murder at a local synagogue? And what if it were reputed to be a crime of passion involving an elderly man allegedly shooting a middle-aged man over a 52-year-old woman?

Bringing services to an abrupt and stunning end, this news event seemed incredible when it was first reported on TV.

NEW DOLL IN TOWN -

Fulla steps out of her shiny
pink box wearing a black abaya
and matching head scarf.

She is named after a type of jasmine that grows in the Levant, and although she has an extensive and beautiful wardrobe (sold separately, of course), Fulla is usually displayed wearing her modest "outdoor fashion." She also has her own tiny prayer rug in pink felt.

Around the Middle East little girls
can now be seen pedaling down
the street on their Fulla bicycles
in trademark "Fulla pink."

It's Ramadan!
Holiday Greetings
to those who observe.

Although I have been looking around the Internet for a survey or description of the TV specials and mini-series for the period this year, I haven't been able to find any. Maybe next week. I'm just curious as to what people are buzzing about :-)

BAGHDAD IMPURITIES:
Some Excerpts from
Recent Salam Pax
-

Baghdad Districts like Ameriyah have become Jihadi Central. After they blew up all the clothes shops there they started blowing up grocery shops and now they have moved on to shops selling watches. Very symbolic isn’t it? Time stops HERE...

He is thinking of moving to another district because that area has become too Sunni. Are we going to start putting up concrete walls between Baghdadi districts now?

A week ago when a car bomb exploded near a gas station there they had to call medics to pick up pieces of dead people from their front garden.

Next on the PM’s agenda is a plan to allow only Sunnis on the street on odd days and Shia only on even days. [It's a sardonic joke.]

Salam also has a long entry (Sat, Sept 10th) describing efforts to cope with the ambiguities evoked by the proposed Iraqi constitution. They're going to have to develop a margin of tolerance for ambiguity, I expect.

Yeah, Salam's still bloggin'...

REAR-VIEW MIRROR:
Driving Ms Karen -

Nicholas Kralev has a thoughtful article about Karen Hughes' recent trip to the Middle East. Ah, no ranting!

There appears to be some confusion there about "public diplomacy." Some of the folks there seem to think it is synonymous with "public relations." Not so.

Public diplomacy means communication with the public in contrast to communication between governments.

It is a valuable mission and one which folks there should take advantage of-- unless they fear that their State Security Police will go after them if they try to do so.
