I don't think that Newsweek should have started all this. It was thoughtless and irresponsible of them. According to some TV reporters, the Newsweek sources of this material were not identified, so that the material may not have been sufficiently substantiated.

A US Senate report claims that George Galloway, the carpet-bagging Scottish pol who just won an MP seat in the East End of London, was granted allocations for millions of barrels of oil under the oil-for-food program.
Galloway was kicked out of the Labor Party for his vociferous criticism of the invasion of Iraq but went on to win his seat under the aegis of the Respect Party.
He's had face-to-face confrontations with both Jeremy Paxman of BBC Newsnight and with Salam Pax, the Baghdad Blogger.

AL-JAZ: New Developments -
*In a move the network says will expand regional debate on democracy, al-Jazeera last month launched a 24-hour Arab equivalent of C-SPAN. 'Al-Jazeera Live' has run parliamentary doings in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories, as well as President Bush's recent speech on the energy bill, a news conference by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and daily White House and State Department briefings.
Teams of workers are building a vast extension at the back of al-Jazeera's building, mainly to house a 24-hour English-language channel due to be launched later this year. It will broadcast four hours each from Washington, London and Malaysia and 12 hours from its headquarters here.*

It's strange that he hasn't expressed any qualms about distributing V**gra or similar drugs to men. He doesn't mention any reservations about sexing-up geezers or fueling elderly rapists with these drugs. That doesn't disturb his religious convictions or bother his conscience at all.
Last year I was physically assaulted by one of these sexed-up geezers, an elderly 75 year old man, who grabbed me and nearly raped me before I managed to outwit him. And who do you suppose got him all sexed-up like that, hmmm? It was some utterly unconcerned pharmacist like Stephens.
Why is it that his religious conscience dictates that he control only women?
This is a very important issue which may eventually dictate where you live. And it will result in a demographic redistribution of the American population through a complete sectarian breakdown. Suburban sprawl is already destroying American society in many ways; this issue will further corrode any remaining shreds of communitarian sensibility.

Why was John Bolton proposed for the UN post if he is such a seemingly repugnant character?
An increasingly large percentage of ordinary Americans across a broad political spectrum have become increasingly concerned about, among other things, heinous mass murderers, homicidal dictators, and flaming psychopaths being installed on the UN Human Rights panel.
Some are perturbed, some are irked, and an increasing number are outraged.
John Bolton is being portrayed in the U.S. as a sort of pit bull terrior who's going to hold the line on this issue somehow. I am not privy to the strategies of the Bush White House and I have no way of determining if their (as yet untested) strategies would work.
Jihad Al Khazen's perspective is not so unique in the Middle East where many residents are orphans of the Ottoman Empire. While he is unusually privileged to be living in London, many others are living in closed societies from which they do not have free access to outside information. Many are imprisoned in illiteracy. Many have been wandering around in the dark for the last 100 years. They have identity and other problems. Many of these people do not know what civil rights are, first-hand. And you can't miss what you don't know.
Khazen, as educated as he may be, is obviously oblivious to the concerns of many Americans. His mind is so twisted by an indoctrination which is blinding him, that he cannot empathize with the feelings of repulsion that many relatively normal Americans have for the prospect of an axe murderer evaluating people's civil and human rights.
Think a few quick remedial courses could
get Khazen up to speed for the 21st Century?

*For some it is the end of the blog. For others, it is proof that blogging has earned its place in the media. Blogs, or online weblogs, in which opinions and reports are posted on the internet for everyone to read, are to get a dose of celebrity.*
The first problem is: it's not a blog.
The MSM started this campaign by reifying Wonkette as a blog. She's an online, paid columnist, hired and employed by a company. A blogger is widely understood to be self-selected. By recruiting these people, Huffington is not blogging and neither are they. Would you hire someone else to write your blog for you?
There's another problem for me personally. It started when the NY Times began their "Op-Ed" Page. Their purpose was to provide Henry Kissinger with a place to comment. I have nothing against him, but I don't ever want to be subjected to his comments again. The same holds true for the people Huffington is recruiting. We see them on TV, they're in the newspapers, they're everywhere. And now we won't be able to escape from them crowding our computer screens. When is enough, enough?
The agenda here is to control the blogging commentary, dominate it, and then crowd it out. And they're starting out dishonestly by reifying her online column as a blog which it is not. It's a "group" blog? There are already "group" websites such as Townhall which do the same thing.
I have been seriously considering ending my blog and never reading another.
First it was Pop-Up Ads, then some of the MSM turned their websites into assaultive pachinko-like simulations which gave me a headache. And now this.

Saudi pop star (and chick magnet!) Hisham Abdel Rahman learned about the "downside" of celebrity when he got mobbed by fans at a shopping mall.
*Star or not, Saudi Arabia's enforcers of virtue make no exceptions: handshakes and congratulatory kisses in mixed company are a no-no in a public mall. Religious authorities briefly detained Saudi singer Hisham Abdel Rahman for causing an indecent scene, a Riyadh police official said Saturday.*

Sat night around dinner time, between about 6 and 8pm, I casually flicked on the TV and almost fell out of my chair when I saw a bulletin ticker crawling across the bottom of the screen describing this incident and mentioning him by name. And by Sunday, sure enough, the incident has escaped and it's all over the U.S. media, including my local newspaper.
Small world, huh?!

I note that this Middle East Studies mess is still slowly reverberating around the
Blogging World.
Will we ever get to the bottom of this "he said" vs. "she said" thing and establish the facts? Probably not.
I came away from all this with some suspicions, though, and some speculations... but you must first adjust your ever-ready tinfoil hat and fasten your seatbelt! Ready?
I suspect that this whole mess was originally instigated by a college student at a rival university in a misguided effort to promote his alma mater at the expense of Columbia U by making Columbia look bad in comparison. When you know approximately how someone would react to a particular stimulus, you can manipulatively push his buttons and, it seems to me, set off an entire crazy machine of chain reactions stemming from your original poke.
Just something to think about.
